I have been so very bad at updating Seeing Red of late (MFA, I blame you!), but this month finally took a picture to contribute to the Project Naked video. Project Naked is an Edinburgh based blog run by Hannah Tait and Megan Hood, that aims to record and publish people experiences and perceptions of their own bodies. They are currently accepting submissions of images for their upcoming video.

Yesterday we had a comment here on the blog about how this project is not art and that Jesus will judge us for doing this non-art. So it’s easy to use the often heard slur “don’t think that what you’re doing is art” to put down people who’s visual practice you don’t like. Especially to people who aren’t white, male, straight, middle-class artists. Well, truth is, I don’t care if what we do here is art or not – to me it’s a artistic activism to upset exactly that Christian sense of shame and taboo that is put on female sexuality, bodies and menstruation. Therefore, I’m not upset that Jesus (eh… I mean, you, the anonymous commentator) is upset – to me that is the aim of my visual practice.

Secondly, I had an e-mail this morning that made me so happy! This is an excerpt: “I really just wanted to say a big thank you for bringing the whole issue of menstruation and eroticism into the open, and to let you know that almost entirely thanks to you both, me and my new partner have felt “liberated” to explore together everything which we had both suppressed in ourselves individually for so long.” and “now happily enjoying lots of way-out sex with our menses !” Thank you so much for this lovely e-mail – it totally makes it worthwhile!

I’d say a successful two days here on the blog. We have a few performances and projects coming up in the spring and promise to get more regular with our updating again too!
